Helpful hints to Speed Tax Rebates

The last two digits of your social security number and whether or not you choose direct deposit will determine how quickly you receive your tax rebate check from the IRS.

E-filing (electronic filing) is a method of transmitting your tax return directly to the IRS electronically.  You can complete your taxes or file for an extension without sending any paper forms to the IRS.  E-filing offers speed, security and accuracy, and helps you get your refund faster.  The average refund for an e-filed federal return is received within 10 days.  The average refund for a traditional return is received in 6 to 8 weeks.

Every year, from February 1st through April 15th, trained and certified AARP tax-aide volunteers prepare low and middle income taxpayers federal tax returns electronically, allowing individuals to receive their refund much faster.  I have listed a few local tax-aid sites and their perspective schedules below or you can call 1-888-227-7669 to locate other AARP tax-aide sites.

·        St. Peters Parish Center in Millinocket,  Tuesdays, 9:00 – 10:00 am & Wednesdays, 6:00 – 7:00 pm, call 746-3739

·        Ballard Hill Community Center in Lincoln, Mondays, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, call 746-3739

·        Mattawamkeag Library, Mondays, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, call 794-9057

If you have access to the internet you may be eligible to prepare and file your federal tax return electronically for free.   If your adjusted gross income was $56,000 or less in 2008, you are eligible to electronically prepare and file your taxes at IRS.gov with Free File. Free File is safe and easy to use, as it asks simple questions and puts your answers on the correct forms.   Go to IRS.gov, click on "Free File," and select a tax preparation company from the list.  You'll be directed to the site of the company you choose, where you can electronically prepare and e-file your return.

If you don't require the question-and-answer method, or if your income is too high to use the Free File described above, you can still complete the basic IRS tax forms online and e-file your return.  Be aware that e-filing IS NOT a "rapid refund."  Rapid refunds are very high-interest short-term loans.  Typically, they will only speed up your refund by a week or two faster than e-filing, depending on your situation.

Taxpayers can access a great deal of free tax information on IRS.gov.  A new feature for IRS.gov is 1040 Central, which has all the help, forms and information taxpayers need to file their returns.  You also can contact the IRS for tax questions at 1-800-829-1040 or receive tax forms by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).
